“State of Mind”

I had the urge to draw a face. The primary colors presented were smeared on the canvas to avoid wasting paint. I tried painting my face at the bottom, but it didn’t look right. I felt like a clown, so I kept myself pale with circular blush on my cheeks. Every brushstroke beyond that was at random- I had no plan to execute upon making this. The random arrangement of flowers, colors, and patterns represents my uncertainty in myself and what I was creating.

I started this Acrylic painting in a bad state of mind. I had been feeling Isolated; my days felt repetitive, and I constantly felt disappointed in certain situations that were happening in my life. Whenever I feel down to the core, I get an urge to create something. Before I started painting on canvas, I painted my face entirely green. I don’t know why, but I was home alone, and I had the freedom to do that. I painted the upper part of my face on the top of the canvas to look at the viewer. I didn’t know what my intentions were with most of the process of creating this piece.

I painted a butterfly to symbolize the connection that I, my sister, and my mother have. It reassures us that we are okay. I added a bible verse,

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." -Matthew 11:28-30

After writing the bible verse, I felt better, and I didn’t want one of my biggest pieces of art to be an embodiment of my sadness. This art is a transition of emotion- it was my state of mind.
